Domestic Violence

What is Domestic Violence? 

 

Domestic violence may look different to different people and different cultures. Factors can be ingrained in us from a very young age.

 

Violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner.

• One or both of the partners uses psychological, physical, or sexual violence to try to get power or control over the other.

• Domestic violence can occur in heterosexual and same-sex relationships

• Domestic Violence can also occur between a parent and child, siblings, or even roommates.

 

Does Non-physical violence exist? 

 

Yes - non-physical violence does exist. 

Examples of non-physical abuse includes: 

  • Emotional/Psychological Abuse: traumatizes the victim by acts,

threats of acts, or coercive tactics (e.g., humiliation, control,

withholding info, isolation, denying access to basic resources

  • Financial Abuse: withholding money, stealing money, and restricting

the use of finances
